One of my all-time favorite desserts is a beloved family tradition dubbed “fruit pizza.” The legacy of fruit ‘za was passed down to me by my mother, who learned it from my aunt, whose friend starting making it years ago. Thanks, Joyce!

The simple formula is this: a giant cookie layered with frosting and embellished with seasonal fruit.

This king of desserts had a long reign throughout my childhood birthdays and took on many forms. I recall the year my mom layered it with green frosting and added horse and fence figurines to create a pasture scene with banana hay bales. A fabulous turtle with a blinged-out berry shell made an appearance another year. There were also many eye-catching renditions of concentric fruit circles.

Admittedly, during those early years, most of my anticipation was for sinking my teeth into the fruit pizza’s thick, sweet frosting and cookie crust. I didn’t dislike the adorning fruit, but it was decidedly secondary. Now, the fruit is the main draw for me. Isn’t it fascinating how we can enjoy the exact same things throughout…
