Hi friends,

I hope you’re staying healthy and hungry for a better world (and plants). Tenderly here to say, it’s the freakin’ weekend and let’s dismantle all systems that are designed to oppress!

As pictured above: BABY FAWNS!!! (Also, important advice on what NOT to do if you come across a fawn yourself.)

🍄🐛 Sarah shared an adorable, kid-friendly (or inner-kid-friendly) recipe for chocolate “dirt” cups with vegan mushroom gummies.

Jessica’s latest Sanctuary Stories column is about the lucky chickens saved from one of the many mass “cullings” of excess animals that have been happening due to the coronavirus epidemic. These lucky birds got out.

Arabella grappled with a tiger print rug, the ethics of using animal prints as a vegan, and the limits of so-called ethical consumption in general. She also shared a bunch of wonderful ideas for utilizing dried fruit in your kitchen for delicious taste and more sustainable shopping.

Meet Kitzia, the Grumpiest Cat of All. Cantankerous Queen. Priestess of Petulance. She is our Ornery Overlord and we must bow down before her.

A veterinarian on the emotional toll of euthanasia.

If one cares about the fight against coronavirus, one must boycott the flesh of animals. When you eat meat, you are funding half of the nation’s coronavirus hotspots. You are voting with your dollar, and casting your vote for COVID-19. It’s time to instead vote for the health of this nation and the lives of others. To quote Billy Williams, an employee of Tyson Foods: “I’d rather have somebody go without their bacon and have my coworkers alive.” — Macken Murphy, Humans to the Slaughter

I am personally grateful to Laura this week because after editing her lovely piece about The Hour, a two-season BBC drama from 2011, I suggested to my husband that we try it and now we are fully obsessed at just four episodes in. Highly recommend! Laura pays tribute to the show with a VANILLA WHISKEY SPONGE CAKE, which, get outta here. 🎂🎂🎂

Why do cats seem to love the color blue?

For a less ambitious but equally delicious dessert project, Alicia brought us a recipe for a raw, no-bake tart that will deliver dessert without overheating your home. Alicia also shared her delicious, rich, surprisingly easy homemade ketchup recipe, which is totally customizable so you can make the spicy, sweet, or tangy ‘house ketchup’ of your wildest dreams.

CHEERS TO GETTING THROUGH ANOTHER WEEK

Drinking together, apart

Back when she wrote her very first Bartenderly column, Laura came up with this vegan take on The Horse’s Neck, a classic brandy cocktail. Now it seems particularly appropriate as I aim to maintain a respectful distance from every single person I encounter.

Respectful Distance

  • 1oz brandy (I used Napoleon — vegan-friendly and wallet-friendly)
  • 2oz clear apple juice
  • 3oz ginger beer
  • Long strip of lemon peel, for garnish

Pour all the ingredients over ice in a tall glass, stir gently to combine, and then garnish with the lemon peel. I left mine as it is, but if you want to make it curly, wind the peel carefully around a skewer to coax it into shape.

TENDERLY REC ROOM

On Fridays, we tell you about things we like

“One of my fave people to follow on TikTok/the internet in general is leading a group reading of “Are Prisons Obsolete?” by Angela Davis. Gem Nwanne (who is vegan btw!) will be sharing reading questions each week as well as hosting a virtual book group through their Patreon page. Follow along and get updates for the next six weeks via their Instagram!” Arabella

“ James Beard Award-winning chef and food activist Bryant Terry recently reshared his piece from 2014 on the problematic nature of Thug Kitchen, a plant-based blog run by a white couple who have also published three cookbooks based off the blog. Please give ‘The problem with ‘thug’ cuisine’ a read if you have not already.” Arabella

“The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone is a peaceful protest site in Seattle that has successfully become a six block cop-free zone in the midst of global protest against police violence and in defense of Black lives. I am obsessed, of course, and Ijeoma Oluo’s photos are some of my favorites.” — Summer Anne

“Tenderly’s publishing platform + partner, Medium, has launched a new blog about the fight against anti-Black racism. It’s called Momentum and it’s a highly recommended follow for Medium subscribers. Don’t stop now!” — Summer Anne

Tons of movie recommendations have been going around with Netflix even creating a Black Lives Matter collection on its platform. My personal recommendation is the 2019 documentary “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.” This beautiful portrait of Morrison’s life and her cosmic impact on literature features interviews with Morrison herself alongside Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and Oprah Winfrey. It is an honor just to listen to all these voices gathered in one place.” Arabella

“I really enjoyed Soleil Ho’s story about mushroom growing kits, especially the touching and adorable anecdote about a daughter connecting with her faraway elderly parents through a shared obsession with mushroom cultivation.” — Summer Anne

WHAT SHOULD YOU EAT?

A vegan recipe recommendation from the Tenderly archives

Nafy Flatley shared her recipe for Vegan Mafè from the La Cocina Cookbook in a wonderful interview with Alicia last August. This recipe is a veganized version of a peanut vegetable stew she often ate in Senegal. It can be served with brown rice or a baguette and makes for a delicious, rich, satisfying meal for a big family or lots of leftovers — the recipe is for 6–10 servings!
