This morning, I wake up, like always, at 7:02. I stretch, dislodge Astrid (my cat) from her sleeping spot next to me, and get up to shower. I wait a few seconds before closing the door to the bathroom to let two cats sprint inside, like they always do.

When I finish in the bathroom, I get dressed and start to make coffee. I grind the beans and put the pot on the stove, and then I listen to the tap-tap-tap of 8 kitty paws running towards the kitchen, because they know what’s about to happen.

Chumbo and Astrid, reporting for breakfast!

Opening the fridge, I pause for a moment to stroke Chumbo, who stretches up to put both his paws on the freezer door in anticipation. I get out their breakfast and feed them — always the same thing.

I pour the coffee into the same mug I always use and sit down with my breakfast. After about 5 minutes, I uncross my legs under the table to accommodate Astrid, finished with her own breakfast, who comes to sit next to my chair at the table.

Sure enough, as soon as there’s available real-estate on my lap, she hops up, curls up into a ball…
