I have had my cats in my life just over a year. I adopted them as fresh 7-week-old litter mates. I had no idea how much they would make me think.

My professional training is in language. I have a degree in the science of human behavior, and I’ve taken and taught course after course on how we learn language skills, how language is classified, how to teach language, the simple power of possessing this skill.

Being a writer, I’m a lover of words. A beautiful phrase can make tears swell and fall. I’m also a musician, and combining lyric and melody, poetry set to tune, tugs at my heart in profound way.

I’ve never had cats before. I had always heard of the whole “cats are aloof” thing. Cats are easy to take care of because they just don’t care about much.

I don’t know about your cats, but with mine, those are patently false statements.

Linus and Lucy like to be held like babies. If I sit down, they are in my lap. I have to make time to lie on the floor with them. Linus has a shoe fetish, and is most comforted if he is lying on a pair of my heels, which looks mighty uncomfortable. Lucy cries when I leave.
