When traveling, staying in a hotel can be a minefield for vegans. On a recent visit to the Cognac region of France (rarified space, indeed), the option on the dinner menu for me was… a bowl of undressed quinoa with some avocado and roasted root vegetables tossed about. Not only did this dish not even attempt to provide any flavor, but it gave me no sense of place by serving ingredients indigenous to Latin America. Why would I ever want those while in France?

That’s why I’ve been heartened to see some hotels make an attempt to have vegans feel at home while they’re away from the comfort of their nutritional yeast and soaked cashews. One of the biggest efforts has been put forth by the Loews Hotels chain, which pairs itself up with local businesses in every city where they have a home as part of their “Flavors” program. (Added bonus? They’re pet friendly.) In Minneapolis, they’ve chosen the Herbivorous Butcher, which got national attention when they opened in 2017 as the first plant-based butcher shop in the country, serving up seitan-based meats and house-made cheeses.
