The winners of the National Audubon Society’s 11th annual Photography Awards beat out a large competition of more than 6,000 entries from the U.S. and Canada this year. Each of the winners, including six prizes and four honorable mentions, celebrates the beauty, resourcefulness, and ingenuity of North America’s birds, while a special section, “Plants for Birds,” also highlighted the native plants birds rely on for sustenance and habitat.

One of these photos, “American Dipper,” was singled out for the Fisher Prize, which honors a combination of originality and technical expertise, and the Grand Prize winner is a breathtaking photograph of a double-breasted cormorant plunging into the midst of a school of sardines in Mexico. Each in their own way, these gorgeous photos showcase a revealing moment in the daily routines of one of the unique and beautiful avian friends we share our world with.
