December is a busy month at animal shelters as families come in search of the perfect gift. In the past, rescue professionals cautioned against giving pets as presents, but nowadays, we distinguish between “surprise” pets (never a good idea) and the gift of a planned pet adoption (thoughtful! fun!).

Rather than putting a puppy under the tree, surprise your kids with a homemade gift certificate good for one adoption at the local animal shelter, and make the selection process a family outing. It’s a great opportunity to teach your kids about responsible pet parenthood, and a rescue pet makes a much better gift than inanimate objects that will be forgotten as soon as the holiday high wears off.

Okay, that’s my obligatory “how to responsibly give the gift of a pet” schpiel out of the way. On to the dogs! The pups below are in Portland, Oregon, but if you’re elsewhere in the country, check out the Pet Sommelier™ suggestions for similar dogs awaiting a home for the holidays.

This week, we sample a nervy chihuahua, a vintage terrier mix, a subtle hound, and the hunkiest hunk that ever hunked (a pit bull, natch).
