Welcome back to Elisapets, the column in which I (Elisabeth) review pets (mostly dogs so far, but “Elisadogs” doesn’t sound as good).

The purpose of these reviews is to bring attention to animals who need homes, but in truth, Portland is among the best towns in the country for pet adoptions. A decade ago, area shelters and rescue groups formed an alliance focused on reducing unnecessary euthanasia and increasing adoptions, and it worked. The percentage of animals leaving the shelter alive increased from 60% to over 90%.

All that is to say: the pets I’m meeting aren’t in dire need. That’s why we include the Pet Sommelier feature to introduce you to homeless animals in other parts of the country where adoption stats aren’t as good. So check out those links, and consider adopting a pet from a high-risk shelter within your geographical area.

Of the Portland-local pets reviewed this week, we have a grippy border collie, a crisp chihuahua mix, a dense Pekingese, and a world-class pug. I’m saving the best for last and that’s definitely not because I’m biased because I know him personally i.e. he’s been sleeping in my bed for the past month and a half and is snoring at my feet as I write this.
