We have established that I am a proud Old-School Vegan, having been vegan since a time in history when we had to get our specialty burger mixes at Adventist health food shops — yes, mixes, not pre-formed patties — and when the only option for coffee outside the home was black. Although I had been a vegetarian for 12 years when I started transitioning and was full of zeal for animal rights activism, veganism was nascent in society at the time — at least in my world — and I was apprehensive about how attainable it was. Eventually, I just learned enough about the ways that the dairy and egg industries exploit, harm and violate animals that are no less cruel than the meat industry I’d shunned for ethical reasons, and I just made the leap.

While I did have a fair number of concerns, I didn’t need to have been so apprehensive. Even in 1995, there were work-arounds to my worst concerns and even if there weren’t, it was still really not that big of a deal. Almost all of the worries I had about the feasibility of going and staying vegan in 1995 turned out to be either not that insurmountable a problem or are issues that time and progress have fixed. What is holding you back today?
