A Perfect (Vegan) Weekend in Mexico City
Tacos, tortas, chilaquiles, and so much more await over three perfect days in CDMX
Eating in Mexico City is a glorious assault on the senses. Every morning, taqueros on bicycles carrying baskets of steamed tacos de canasta, filled with mashed potato and frijoles, roam the busy streets. Later, students, office workers in suits, laborers and families cram around tiny food stands with a plate of tacos balancing on top of a cup of horchata in one hand, leaving the other free to eat with. There’s always at least three salsas on the counter (all spicy), plus fresh onion, limes and cilantro to sprinkle on top. The Mexican motto: Uno más, por favor.
Even better, the city has an innovative vegan culture which means even those sticking to a plant-based diet can get in on the action. To make the most of your weekend in CDMX, there are a couple of things to be aware of. The chic, tree-lined suburbs of La Roma and La Condesa, just southwest of the historic center, are the heart of the city’s vegan culture, with plenty of boutique hotels and Airbnbs on offer in the area. The historic center and the neighborhood of Coyoacan, further south, are also good places to base your trip if you’re looking for a more traditional atmosphere.
