When you already hold a film like Gillian Armstrong’s 1994 Little Women so deeply in your heart and have done since you first saw it at the impressionable age of nine — well, that same heart can be a little suspicious of new adaptations. After finally watching Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel — and I say “finally,” because with the onset of coronavirus it feels like at least nine months has passed since the film’s late December release — I am happy to confirm my heart has space to hold two versions.
