Two cats live with me, or should I say, I live with them. You know the saying, “Dogs have masters. Cats have slaves.”

But even slaves are grateful for the company, and I can’t imagine what it would be like if I lived alone, with nothing that breathed or moved. Over the last few weeks, I’ve come to appreciate how cats live and what they prioritize.

They’re about comfort and necessity.

There’s a freedom that comes with distancing yourself from that which isn’t necessary. The stuff that’s the fluff of life, that takes up our valuable time but doesn’t add value to it.

I’ve always felt bad that my cats, Cesar and Xena, haven’t been able to go outside for the last 10 years.

I moved from a house in a neighborhood to a condo on the main drag, so now my darlings live indoors. I’ve watched them perch longingly on the window sills, drinking in the world outside. It’s a lovely view, but it’s a sad scene.

Now I can say I literally feel their pain. Sequestered to the indoors, we have become kindred spirits. Or should I say I’ve acclimated to their routines?
