How to Write for Tenderly
We’re closed for pitches from new writers, but there’s still a way to be part of Tenderly…
Tenderly is regretfully not currently accepting pitches from new writers. We’ll let you know if that changes in the future. However, we are accepting post submissions through Medium’s paid partner program.
Tenderly is a friendly and radical vegan magazine that publishes on and in partnership with Medium. We run reported pieces, explainers, opinion, photo collections, comics, personal essays, humor, original recipes, and more. We’re excited by truly fresh, new ideas, and by pieces that wouldn’t have a home anywhere but Tenderly. You don’t have to be vegan to contribute to Tenderly, but you should know that we never run stories that condone animal exploitation in any form.
Tenderly aims to publish stories that have a strong, thoughtful, personal voice. Although we cover many serious and important topics, we try to do so with warmth and compassion for all, including non-vegans. We are always looking for stories that convey enthusiasm and warmth, that amuse and delight as well as inform. We’re also fascinated by diverse perspectives on animals, food, and veganism, and we are always eager to publish writers from underrepresented groups and stories from all over the world
How to work with Tenderly through Medium’s Partner program
Tenderly is closed for pitches, but not for partner program submissions! Medium’s partner program allows any writer on Medium, a free publishing platform, to sign up to designate some or all of their posts as for Medium subscribers, and receive a monthly payment based on subscriber views to your post. FYI: amount paid out by Medium varies greatly depending on the post, and it can be hard to predict what will do well with subscribers.
We often run stories from Medium writers about the special bonds between humans and other species, plant-based recipes, humor, and passionate opinion and personal pieces about animals, the environment, and veganism in general. We really love comics, photo-essays, and any other posts with a strong visual element. Creativity is great, but fiction and poetry are not really our thing.
The best way to submit Medium posts for Tenderly’s consideration is to email the URL of the draft version of your Medium post to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you have a previously published post you’d like us to consider, you may also just email us the published post URL, along with any context you’d like to share.
Unfortunately, at this time we don’t always have the resources to answer every email we receive — but if your post is accepted for publication with Tenderly, you will receive an email within 10 days of your submission.
For best chances of being accepted to Tenderly, please consider the following
- The post should fit broadly into a category of animals, plant-based food, sustainability and ethical consumption, or vegan/animal rights philosophy and culture
- No recipes or posts with any animal products used or any endorsements of animal exploitation
- Ensure your Medium account has basic details filled in, and sign up for the Medium Partner Program (including filling out payment info through Stripe) to ensure you’re paid by Medium.
If you’ve already been accepted to Tenderly as a writer for one of your past pieces, you can always submit a post directly to us within Medium anytime! If it’s not a fit, we’ll write a quick private note to let you know.
Accepted partner pieces get an edit from Tenderly, usually focused on copy, house style, headline optimization, and ensuring any images used are appropriately licensed or free to use. If any more major changes or rewrites are needed for us to publish we’ll drop you an email.
If you have any questions about how all of this works, feel free to email us those as well! email@example.com
If you are promoting a new book or vegan product, email firstname.lastname@example.org for coverage consideration. We do not accept payment for coverage or run advertising of any kind.
