In a perfect world, everyone would know about veganism, respect vegans and vegan products, and, ultimately, be vegan themselves. While we’ve made a lot of progress with the vegan movement over the last decade⁠ — more than half of the world’s largest food companies are working on plant-based options⁠ now — there are still many people who are unaware of the lifestyle and movement, making it very difficult for vegans and vegetarians to order at restaurants or talk to anyone about their lifestyle choice.

Whether you’re ordering from a restaurant that doesn’t appear to be knowledgeable about veganism, or talking to a family member about why you’re no longer eating the ham at Christmas, here are some tips on how to talk about veganism almost anywhere with anyone, no matter where you are in your vegan journey.
