How to Make Smoky Tofu

My Uncle Ken is making an effort to change his diet. Knowing that I’m vegan he asked me for help. “Could you suggest a vegan cookbook?” he asked on Facebook Messenger. Unfortunately, I could not. The only pair of cookbooks that I own were sent to me by the very same Uncle Ken just a few weeks ago.

Yesterday, I was cooking in my apartment buildings communal kitchen. One of the tenants walked in, took a deep breath, and said: “Wow! That smells amazing. Are you making bacon?”

“Vegan bacon,” I said with a laugh.

“Seriously, what are you making?”

“I am making tofu.”

If an innocent carnivore could be fooled by the smell of tofu, I thought maybe this recipe could satisfy Uncle Ken.

This tofu recipe has become a staple for me because it’s fast, easy, and flexible. The main ingredient that gives it that “bacon-y” smell is liquid smoke.
