Chris and Mariesa Hughes have 17 grumpy old pups at their rescue center for senior dogs in Clifton Park, New York, which means that family photos are an adorable exercise in controlled chaos.

The best technique for arranging these furry curmudgeons is to focus on the smallest guys first. Get the little ones together and put them in the back, as they’re the most likely to stay put.

Then it’s time to wrangle the big guys. This will require bargaining, lavish promises that you probably can’t keep, and superhuman patience.

Important: Do not panic if everyone walks away. This is a natural part of the process.
