How a Trip to an Animal Sanctuary Can Change Your Life
I wish my family had gone a long time ago
Taking my family to an animal sanctuary had been on my wish list for years. I follow several on social media and fantasized about us all petting pigs and cuddling goats together. Finally, last spring I booked a two-night stay at Catskill Animal Sanctuary in Saugerties, NY, for June.
It was two days after school ended. We were tired from the end of the school year whirlwind but excited to get away and have a new experience.
At least that’s how I saw it.
In the backseat of the car, my 13-year-old compared what our family was doing to what she saw her friends’ families doing as she tracked them on social media. One was in Mexico, another in London. Many were at the beach.
“Why can’t we take a normal vacation like other families?!” she wanted to know. A misty rain fell from the cloud-covered sky.
I told her we’d spent plenty of time at the beach during our lives and I wanted us to have an experience, not just a vacation.
She rolled her eyes.
My non-vegan husband didn’t complain as he drove us up through New Jersey and into New York state, but he did tease me.
