The artist Maria Paula Filippelli, who is known as Airam online, has become one of the most visible vegans in her city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Through her tattoos and illustrations, Filippelli promotes care for animals in all of her work — dainty illustrations of cows, pigs, and more, she creates art out of compassion. We were interested in how she became vegan, how easy it is to be vegan in her city, and how, if at all, being vegan influences her work.

When did you become vegan, and why?
I began the transition to veganism a little more than six years ago; I’d already been vegetarian for about five years at that time and when I understood the industry of animal products was the same or worse than meat, I found the only viable option was to become vegan.
