The bad news is relentless. I come up with 500 reasons per day to continue in my anxiety right now, not the least of which is the state of not knowing when this pandemic will end, or that (as there have been warnings) more pandemics will be the result of us using animals as we currently do, from wildlife to the billions of animals in factory farms.

I’m lucky enough to be healthy, and so is my family who is staying home with me. We don’t have to go into jobs that put us at risk, and my toddler is too young to know all of this is happening. He’s just thrilled everyone is home together all. the. time.

Still, we look for new reasons to smile, and social distancing makes it exciting when a familiar face walks by. So as I looked out the window the other day, I jumped with excitement at the sight of my neighbor — a red fox.

There’s a mother fox who for the past couple years has brought her family of pups (I’ve named them The Mulders) to a spot she seems to have decided is safe: our backyard. I like to think she knows she’s found some of the vegans in the neighborhood, although I know, she just lucked out. It does make me smile that she keeps bringing her little ones here.
