An important reminder from Tenderly…
Hola Tenderly friends,
Thank you being here, I’m glad we made it.
NEW ON TENDERLY
Veganism is about abstaining from cruelty — a slightly different concept than preventing cruelty. Here are 10 more active ways to help animals after you go vegan.
Anouska Parr wrote about 10 cruel cosmetic brands that are still testing on animals, and the companies offering vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics that are a perfect alternative (and in many cases, a total upgrade).
“To make a contribution, one must satisfy a checklist that’s been pre-written by the culture of work in the United States. By a culture that’s anchored in capitalism, colonialism, patriarchy, and white supremacy, that’s anchored in violence, and that perpetuates that violence on us all regularly. To survive within this culture, we comply with it, which keeps us small, or not quite our true selves, stressed and scrambling. And in choosing our own survival, we support the system’s survival.” — Efficiency Shouldn’t Be the Goal, by Leah Pellegrini
This photography project captures the difference a smile can make. :)
This week in being Debbie Downers: I wrote something about the very sad story of baby chicks dying in the mail, and where the blame for such a tragedy should rest. And Arabella wrote about the backstory of Pogo the chimpanzee on The Umbrella Academy, and whether its an accurate reflection of the experiences of primates in space (spoiler alert: it is not).
Adopting a stray cat can be endlessly rewarding, but there are some things you should know first.

TENDERLY REC ROOM
On Tuesdays, we tell you about things we like
“This might seem like a basic and/or vague rec, but I recommend trying something new. Lately I’ve found myself getting bored/dissatisfied with my usual daily activities and so I decided to try something I’ve always been scared of — skateboarding. It feels good to do something with my body and see that I’m making progress; I even skated all the way down the alley the other day without falling off. Maybe one day, I’ll be Betty level (also MUST recommend that show!!!)” — Arabella
“Rest in peace to Justin Townes Earle, a beautiful singer and brilliant songwriter. Justin was just 38 (my age) when he died last Thursday. Many years ago, I saw him play a brilliant show at the Cactus Cafe here in Austin. I deeply love too many of his songs to list here, but I highly recommend digging into his rich catalog to find your own new favorites. Just one of mine: ‘Slippin’ and Slidin’’”— Summer Anne
“Celebrity makeup brands can be hit or miss, but a couple weeks ago I finally got some products from Lady Gaga’s Haus Labs brand (all vegan and all cruelty-free!!!) and I have to say I’m pretty impressed. I don’t wear makeup a ton, but when I do I love to play around with fun colors and looks and these products are perfect for that. If you’re going to only try one product, for sure try the gel pencil eyeliner.” — Arabella
“I used this Rabbit & Wolves breaded, baked, and sauced broccoli recipe to make some very tasty tacos last night (along with homemade tortillas, ofc). I do really wish the name of the recipe wasn’t a joke about drug addiction! With with that said, it’s a fantastic guide for making a deliciously meaty, crispy, perfectly cooked broccoli without deep frying. For the BBQ sauce, I made from scratch and added smoked paprika, cumin, and chili powder, but this recipe is very adaptable to taste and application.”— Summer Anne
