Adopting a Dogfighting Dog
The story of Ginny, who found a loving family after terrible abuse
You can read all about the day that we adopted our pit bull Ginny in this post here, but about a year and a half after we got her, we got an email from the ASPCA (where we adopted her) asking if they could interview us about Ginny’s story. When we adopted Gin, we weren’t told anything about her background, we just knew she had been through a lot and that there were things she needed to work on in a safe and loving environment — well, no problem there! As we started having phone meetings about setting up the interview, we began learning more about Ginny’s past.
Our interviewer at the ASPCA, Amanda, told us that Ginny had been rescued from a big dogfighting ring in the Bronx, NY. I was silent when she told me this, and sensing my hesitation Amanda asked if I had known that. When I was able to speak, I answered “This dog? Are you sure? The one currently snoring on my feet?” We were told that Ginny was found chained with a huge padlock around her neck to a barrel outside in the freezing rain. She was flanked either side by dogs chained down in tiny plywood boxes. Here are the images below, but be warned, you may find them distressing:
