A Guide to Soy-Free Vegan Products

When you can’t consume soy, a lot of popular vegan products are out — here are some of the delicious options soy-free vegans can enjoy

Venturing into vegan food for the first time can be a perplexing adventure of textures and ingredients. Are mycoproteins technically mold? Wait, milk can be made out of peas? While it seems like new plant-based alternatives are cropping up around us all the time, most meat and dairy alternatives available on the market are still primarily soy-based. This is an issue for many people due to allergies and disabilities, and unfortunately makes many vegan products inaccessible for some.

Consuming soy prevents my body from absorbing the medication I take for my chronic illness. Like many things surrounding the topics of wellness and health, soy’s ability to help or harm certain bodies is disputed. Some studies report that people who take this medication can wait four hours between taking the medication and consuming soy to avoid interactions, but I find that it’s easier to simply avoid large amounts of soy. I do have fond memories of drinking Very Vanilla Silk Soy Milk (obviously the best flavor) as a child before I was diagnosed with chronic illness, and will probably always feel envy upon finding recipes for the perfect crispy tofu, but…
