Pie is a symbol of our shared culture here in the United States. There are as many varieties of pie as there are people in this country. Familiar and joyful, pie requires absolutely no occasion but feels appropriate when there is one.

Our star-spangled hearts are rather heavy right now, joy is in short supply, and our familiar routines have been disrupted. There are countless reports of utter tactlessness and violence across the nation towards those who are just trying to keep us all safe from the virus. Yet another case of racism and murder by a police officer surfaced. Protestors are rightly infuriated as they fight for justice. It’s enough to make you feel down about life in the “home of the brave.”

When you need to take a break from everything that is dividing these not-so-united states, bake something that is unanimously loved across our troubled land of the free: pie. Contribute to a more peaceful, sustainable future by making it vegan.

I dub banana cream pie the perfect pie for spring. We’re past prime citrus and pumpkin…
