First, a disclaimer: I am not a wine expert. I am, however, a wine lover.

When I first started drinking wine, I only liked the sweeter stuff. With time, I opened up to all types of varietals: Merlots and Pinot Grigios, Champagnes and Zinfandels, Moscatos and Rieslings — all made their way onto my palate and into my heart. It didn’t surprise my friends when I began frequenting the local wine room that opened in my small town. Soon enough, I was working there.

Things got more complicated when I became vegan.

I had never realized before that, even though it’s derived from grapes, wine isn’t always vegan — the fining process sometimes involves animal byproducts. Google searches and Barnivore have become my bible while navigating this new journey of finding delicious wines that don’t come at the expense of animals.

The animal-centered conversations surrounding wine don’t stop with the fining process, though. During a shift I make dozens of trays filled with various meats and cheeses for others to taste with their wines. Customers often ask which wine would work well with chicken, or for my advice on a bottle of red wine for their steak dinner. The internet is rife with suggestions for how to pair wines with your main dish — which almost always involves meat, cheese, or other animal products.

Vegans want beautifully paired wine and dinner too! I’ve collected some of the best vegan recipes available online and have paired them with certified vegan wines that are delicious and affordable. Ultimately, wine pairing is as subjective as anything else when it comes to the palate, so feel free to mix and match — the important part is to enjoy delicious food and tasty wine, all without harming animals.

I am a Zinfandel girl, so my love for this dark red is no surprise. Zinfandels need a bold dinner…
