From the darkly metaphorical to the hilariously literal, I’ve compiled a playlist spanning eras and genres to celebrate dogs in song form. Some tracks will be familiar to you, but hopefully there are some surprises in store too.

1. “Atomic Dog” — George Clinton

George Clinton gave us so much — this joyful song is practically a playlist in itself, once you list all those who’ve sampled it. Our most famous proponent of canine imagery, Snoop Dogg, notably interpolated the title refrain for his song Who Am I (What’s My Name?)

2. “Hound Dog” — Big Mama Thornton

Though overshadowed by Elvis’ cover, this original recording is a knockout — delivered with immense presence and arch, unhurried verve.
