Gerrard Gethings is a British photographer who finds his muse in animals. His animal portraits are designed to show the personality and character of the subjects, bringing out their unique features and idiosyncrasies to show a real individual. As he says of his work:

Familiarity often makes us forget this, but when you get up close and capture every soulful detail in the eyes of a dog, cat or horse, then you start to remember where it came from. They seem important and individual again.

And although Gethings’s latest project is at its core about similarity, the effect is to make the viewer see the subject as one-of-a-kind, focusing in on the features that make him or her special. Following the success of a similar series photographing dogs, Gethings’s cats are each paired with a model who was selected specifically to match the subject, generating the enjoyable experience for a viewer of contemplating what exactly it is that makes some people look like cats. And vice versa.

For more of Gethings’s delightful animal portraiture, you can follow him on Instagram or his website.
