Calico cats are often stereotyped as mean, standoffish or sassy*, but what you really need to know about these cats are the political, mythical, intellectual, and Freddie Mercury-related facts about them.

1. Calico is not actually a breed of cat, but actually the name of a coat pattern that appears on almost exclusively female cats. Calicos are typically white, black, and orange, sometimes with shades of brown, cream, and gray in the mix.

2. This is not the only gendered cat type; tortoiseshell cats are also mostly female, and orange cats are mostly male.
